Industrial Art Supply Holder

How was everyone's weekend? We've finally been having some Spring-Like Weather here in OK. I've been taking Con-Man outside as much as possible to take advantage.

I've also been hard at work on a few projects for his new Big-Boy Room. First up is an Industrial Inspired Art Supply Holder!

You may remember that his room already had chalkboard paint on every wall. I've been working on changing most of it, leaving only 1 chalk board wall since he really only used the one wall anyway. He has his Dad's old school desk in his room and we needed a place to store all his art supplies instead of scattering them all around the room.

Enter this:

A drywall mud pan from the hardware store. These are pretty inexpensive and I thought it would be a good addition to his room which is going to have a Car/Vehicle theme. I bought 2 of them and got to work.

I used my Silhouette to cut out 2 templates onto contact paper. (If you don't have a Silhouette but would like to try this project try this technique for cutting out templates). After printing them out I peeled the contact paper apart then stuck it on the front of the mud pan.

Next I used some leftover white paint and applied 2 coats over my template; letting each coat dry in between.

After the paint dried I sealed it then very carefully peeled off my contact paper.

Next it was time to hang. I drilled 2 holes for screws then used my usual hanging technique to make sure I hung it straight and level. The dry wall pans are not long enough to be able to screw into the studs; so I used plastic wall anchors to make sure the screws won't come out the wall.

Then all done! I'm thinking about painting the outlets black so they don't stand out as much. And I'd love to repaint the desk but I haven't gotten the Hub's permission yet.

(Can you tell I'm still painting his room?)

This was a fairly quick and easy project and his chalk is finally up off the floor!

How do you keep your children's art supplies organized? Anyone else have an art center in their kids room?
