Simple Side Table

So, about that cute little side table I bought at Ikea. I bought it because it was inexpensive and I had the perfect idea for what to do with it.

I used a poster that I have carried around since college. I used to love (and still do) these old advertising posters. I had a few different ones hanging up in my room in college but don't have any hanging in our house now. I had to make some compromises when the hubs and I moved in together. ;)

So to I decided to use my new table to incorporate one of my old posters into our new home. I started by painting it red and then Mod Podging the Cat Poster on the top. I finished it off by covering it with this:

EnviroTex makes a thick clear coat that is almost indestructible. The box says it's like 50 coats of poly urethane. I like the look it gives a finished project. I've used it once before and have learned several things.
1. Use it outside because it's messy
2. Don't do it on a windy day. It takes a long time to dry and dust and leaves will get stuck in it.
3. You don't need that much to cover your surface

So, here's the finished product:

So to review:

I'm not sure where I'm going to put it yet since most of the colors in our house are earth tones. It'll just hang out in the sun room for a while until I decide on a home for it.

I love your side table - great way to use a beautiful poster, especially when one runs out of wall space.

I love it! But I have a question: how did you prevent the poly from running off the sides of the table? I've always wanted to try it.

I love how you adapted your table from Ikea! What a fun project. I can't believe you had such restraint there, I usually leave with a lot more...saw your previous post too☺

That is one of my favorite posters too - if only I had spare wall space for it... But I guess you've solved that problem! GREAT idea - love how the table turned out. Nice job!

Your creation is super duper Caa-ute!

I love that poster too. I also have a thing for prints done in that style. Last year I saw a painting done by a local artist where he'd painted a cat that looked very similar to the one in your poster. Wonder if he got the idea from that?

Where ever you put that table I'm certian it will spark many ooos and ahhhs, and people will be just pea green with envy. :)

Blessings,
Shanna

Hi! Found you through It's so very cheri. I'm a big fan of Ikea and have not seen that table...now I have a reason to go back :-) I like how the red looks with the black and gold...maybe you could use it to hold you bowl of Halloween candy? The colors seem fallish (making up words) to me. Oh and thanks for the envirotex tips...now I'm not so intimidated.

Hi. I'm visiting from Girl Creative Party Blog Hop. :-) Your table is the first that caught my eye. I love it! If by earth tones you mean browns and tans, I'd put that table in that room to be a great accent. It would be a spot of cheer, and it's so cute. What a great idea!
