Mmmm! Cake Balls

This past weekend we had friends over to watch the LSU/ Tenessee football game. (if you haven't noticed the Tigers are #1!) Geaux Tigers!!

I was looking for a fun cookie recipe to make that I could add some purple and gold icing to, but I came across my Cake Ball recipe first. OOOooo... I haven't made these in a while. They take a little while to make but are dangerously good.

The recipe I have is from The Dallas Morning News. It's a great article talking about how to make cake balls and suggests lots of different flavoring and color ideas. 


Following their recipe I mixed yellow cake and cream cheese icing for the batter. 

As usual I forgot to take pictures of the rest of the cooking method because I'm so busy pouring over the recipe. But- basically I used a melon baller to scoop the batter and hand rolled them. Then refrigerated them, then took them out in batches to roll them in the icing. I used vanilla almond bark for the icing and added some vegetable oil to the mixture like the recipe instructed. This helped the icing not be so thick and roll easier onto my cake balls. The link to the article has really good detailed instructions on what to do!

I used food coloring to get the purple and gold colors. My favorites are the purple ones. They may not be as pretty as professional cake balls but I can almost guarantee they are just as good.

These were a hit at the party- they are easy to eat and went quickly. It was hard not to eat a whole bowlful on my own!

Fabulous Reader Questions

I received an email from a reader with a great question about my recent ceiling fan revamp:

Loved your finished look on the ceiling fan update.  A question...how did you keep the paint from getting into the fan parts?  I'm wondering if it would be easier to use a brush-on paint to avoid this problem?

I have at least 4 fans that I plan to attack soon.

Great question Kim! I actually hadn't thought about how the paint might affect the fan motor (I usually get an idea in my head and just go for it which can be a good or bad thing). I hadn't turned on the fan since I painted it since it's been cold.


But I'm happy to report I turned on the fan for a good while this evening just to see how it did and it's working fine. I also inspected the inside of the motor and it didn't look like much paint got through the holes at all. So apparently my old fan was ugly but it's still in great shape. I hope this encourages anyone who was hesitant about trying this to go for it!

And while we're on the topic of question and answer I received an email from Mary who saw my post on the Anthro Inspired Cupcake Holder made by my friend Samantha. She was wondering what I thought about using super glue instead of Gorilla Glue like Samantha suggested. Since I had not tried the project myself I unfortunately did not have an answer for her. But she tried it herself and had some insight for me that I wanted to share with you:

I commented on your blog a while back about using the hot glue on the cupcake stands.



I wanted to update you on the results of the hot glue. It did NOT work! Heh. The plates instantly stuck together once they touched making it impossible to make adjustment. It seemed like the glue was going to hold, then three days later they all pulled completely apart. I had to start all over and super glue them. So, I should have listened to you and definitely done it right the first time. :)

Anthropologie Inspired Cupcake Stand

Hello Everyone! It seems that this week has become the week of guest bloggers! This time Samantha at My Three Blind Mice will share her tutorial on how to make your own Anthroplogie inspired Cupcake Stand!

But first I wanted to talk a little about her. She is a crafty mommy who has her own etsy where she crochets the cutest things!

Now without further adieu a Cup Cake Plate Stand!

1) Find old, vintage miss matched plates tea cups, and saucers all in the same color (white) from your house, antique stores, thrift stores, garage sales.

2) Arrange them together on top of each other till you get the desired plate stand you like. Then glue them all together using super glue or gorilla glue.

3. Use books to press the items you are gluing together to help the glue bond better.

4) Then youre done! This plate stand works great for cup cakes, cookies or tea sandwiches. It is a great way to add some vintage charm to your next party!
