A few Furniture Updates~

So ever since I decided to actually sell I've been kind of antsy and nervous. What if no one buys my stuff? What if no one likes it? what if what if what if?!?!?!

Ugh scary. But those fears haven't held me back from making more- it's a sickness I think.

Remember when I found that cute little side table for $5? Well it is now all redone, shiny and new and ready for someone to take it home!

The top was all messed up with some sticky gunk that I had to remove with GoGone

The wood on the top was actually really nice. So I restained it a darker color and painted the bottom blue.

I also revamped this little beauty I found on the side of the road:

The mirror was broken and long gone out the frame. But the frame was in good shape so I knew I could save it.

After removing the mirror that was left behind and some clean up and paint, I used the side "wings" to create a cork board/ chalk board:

I used mending plates to attach the two pieces together. And I used the existing backboard (that the original mirrors were attached to) to make the cork and chalk board. Pretty easy and I saved something from being thrown away!

The larger mirror frame I turned into a large chalkboard. The existing backboard on this piece was in bad shape so a new piece of hardboard was cut and painted with chalkboard paint. You can see it hanging up in my booth!! Yay!

More exciting projects coming soon!!

DIY Slate Chalkboard

You know, there are few things I love in life more than a free project. Chocolate comes to mind, and my family of course... but anyway- Free Project!! Woo!

I had found a pile of old slate tiles that had been ripped out of building during demolition a few years ago. The foreman said I could have them since they were just going to toss them. (When in doubt about something just ask! People are usually pretty willing to get rid of stuff.) I took about 8 that were in good shape and carried them around through 2 moves. Unfortunately most of them broke during those moves but I still have 3 left.

I decided I needed to use them ASAP before those ended up broken as well and I made a slate chalk board!

Yep, thats right- no chalk board paint here. It's the real deal. I thought it would be fun to use in the kitchen as a menu board.

If you want to make one of these yourself it's real easy. Here's what you need:

2 Slate Tiles (if you can't find them on the side of the road like I did check your local home improvement store.)

1 piece of scrap plywood or MDF cut down to about 8" x 20" about 3/4" thick (this could vary depending on the size of your tiles, you don't want the wood to close to the edge of the tile. Otherwise it will show)

Liquid Nails

Heavy Duty Picture Hangers

Scrap piece of Molding to be used as a chalk holder

Saw for cutting wood down if need be

First lay out your tiles and determine what size wood you need. Depending on what size your tiles are the size of the wood could vary from the size I used.

Next slather Liquid Nails on the wood, then place the wood centered on the two tiles.

Now, patience. I weighted my wood down under some books and let it set over night.

Once it was all dry I screwed the heavy duty hooks into the wood. This is the reason I used 3/4" plywood- so my screws wouldn't be to long to screw into the wood.

Then I cut down my scrap piece of molding down to about 8" long. Mine was a natural wood look and I thought it looked nice with the slate color. I used Liquid Nails once again and let it set over night.

Then all done! Hang and admire.

Yay! I think it turned out super cute and it was FREE!!

Scary Owl Turned Cute Chalk Board

Just a quick project this week. I wanted to do some work in the wood shop on base but due to budget cuts the hours have been cut without my knowing it. So hopefully next week I'll get in there. I have a project I've been dying to work in!

Anyway: I know owls are making a come back in decor these days, but when I saw this guy in the thrift store the other day:

I doubted anyone would be hanging him in their home any time soon. Ugh. Owls have come a long way as far as looks for the home, and this Scary Screech Owl from the 80's is proof. Yikes!

I bought it because the frame is solid wood with the plan of turning it into a chalk board. I've seen Gail at My Repurposed Life use this trick- just paint over the existing picture and make into something awesome! But my owl pic was just a poster that was glued on, and I made the mistake of trying to take it off the Masonite Board backing and it started peeling completely off.

Mr. Hoots was not a happy camper- he gave me a lot of trouble. After peeling and scraping away I finally had a clean board to work with.

After that was over with I painted the masonite board with chalk board paint, spray painted the frame and sanded it down and Voila!

Awesome vintage wood frame chalk board!

If your wondering why I've had so many chalk board and wall hanging projects lately, the reason because I've been putting a lot of them for sale in a boutique here in Altus along with some of my furniture. So if your ever in Altus, OK stop by and say "Hi!".

And on a side note "Geaux Tigers!" Huge game for us this weekend- I can't wait! The Hubs lucked out and was offered a ticket. So he's headed to Birmingham for the game while I'll head to Houston to visit my family. While I'm there I want to scout out some Architectural Salvage shops for wood for yet another project I have in mind.

The Hubs and I at the last LSU home game.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

From Boring to Beautiful

One thing I've been loving about our Walmart here in our new town (I know- it's a stretch to say "Love" and Walmart together but it's the only grocery store around) is the clearance section! They have a ton of stuff on clearance all the time. I've been able to stock up on toys for Con-Man's Christmas presents and a few things for around the house.

The other day I saw they had  a bunch of office supplies on clearance and I grabbed a few of these dry erase cork boards for $3 each. And I don't know about everyone else but I could really use some organization in my life.

They're ok as they are but I thought they could use some jazzing up. I've been saving more wine corks lately and decided it was time to use some more of them. I've found that sometimes when you glue the whole cork onto something they have a tendency to pop off over time. So this time I decided to slice the corks in half and glue them on that way:

Once I had sliced up a bunch of them I glued them around the frame. I finished off the rough edge with some decorative rope trim. And in no time my wipe off board went from boring to beautiful!

And since I had bought a few of them I made one of them a chalkboard instead of a wipe off board. Just a few coats of chalkboard paint did the job:

Yay! This was an easy way to update an everyday item. Which one do you like best? How do you personalize everyday items around your home?
